A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft announced that Xbox Live would be available to PS4 players for $50 per month in the U.S. and Canada.
Microsoft was quick to note that the free content was not a deal-breaker for PS Plus subscribers, and it’s also not exclusive to Xbox One.
However, it’s the PS Plus exclusivity that has people talking.
“It’s definitely an odd, weird thing,” said Ben Capps, a programmer and PlayStation Plus member who was also the lead developer on PlayStation Network games for Xbox One and PS4.
“I think they could have said it was $30/month, but they didn’t.
They said it would be $40/month.
That was not true.
You can’t just get an Xbox Live subscription for free, you have to pay for it.
And they’ve never really explained that.”
He also said that he’s not sure why Microsoft would have made the announcement, since it’s clear that it’s not a one-time deal.
“They should have just said it’s free,” Capps said.
“If you get it, you can cancel it, or you can switch to a different service.
It’s a no-brainer.”
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Capps also believes that the “free” content will become available to PlayStation Plus subscribers in the future, and that the Xbox One subscription will become more exclusive.
“We are going to be able to provide a lot more content to PS Plus users, especially as we expand to other countries,” he said.
He also pointed out that the PlayStation Plus subscriber base is growing.
“For us, we’re still a small developer, so there’s a lot of growth opportunity, especially if we expand internationally,” Cups said.
In the meantime, Capps is planning on taking the free PS Plus content and running it through a game engine.
“The game engine will be free, and I’ll be able use it to add content to the game that I’m working on,” Cabs said.
But it’s unclear how much content he’s going to have to use to make the PS4-exclusive content available for PS3 and PS2 users.
“At this point I don’t know if there’s going the way they say it’s going,” he added.
Cabs is also looking to expand the PS5 subscription program.
“One of the things I’ve been trying to do with PS5 is to have the ability to give people access to content, and they can play it for free,” he explained.
“So if they want to get the PS3 game, for example, I can provide them with the PS2 game and they could play it on the PS1 platform.
So that would be a way for me to do it.”
Microsoft is also planning to add PS Plus members to Xbox Live Gold.
Microsoft will provide a free Xbox Live Silver subscription for existing Xbox Live subscribers, a new subscription for Xbox Live Platinum members, and a free Gold subscription for Gold members who subscribe to a Gold account.
